Frequently Asked Questions

Life is filled with unanswered questions.
Here are a few answers to at least a couple of them.

How do you pronunce your name?

Thanks for asking! Names are important. We're pronounced "You Are Here Theater".

Why "UR"?

As originally envisioned, "UR" was an abbreviation for "Under Represented".

What started UR Here Theater?

UR Here Theater was borne out of the COVID-19 pandemic shutdowns of 2020. In open-air backyards and wide open garages, local artists got together and read plays for each other. It was a way for local actors and playwrights to gather safely and explore and talk about lesser-known plays and from lesser-known playwrights or simply plays that wouldn’t be likely to be seen in the area.

Can I suggest a script?

Certainly! It's a really good way about how we can help build Community. Get a hold of us on our Contact page and let us know your suggestion! It'll get right to our Lit Team for consideration.

How do you choose the scripts?

The whole process starts at least six months (or more!) before the first performance in a series.

Members of our Literature Team (The Lit Team) read scripts. They score it based on a rubric which includes questions like "How well does this script fulfill our core mission of serving under represented communites?"

The highest-rated scripts from the Lit Team are then presented to the Board of Directors for all board members to read. The Board then votes on the scripts they'd like to see the Company perform. The scripts with the highest number of votes are selected.

Then we obtain performance rights for the chosen scripts.

Occasionally, performance rights aren't available and we have to fall back to another highly-rated script.

What's with the pronouns?

You might not give too much thought to your personal pronouns; particularly if you're cisgender. But everyone’s gender identity is unique and doesn’t always match what others assume. So, asking someone, “What are your pronouns?” is a great way to be inclusive and promote equality. Many people don’t fit into the traditional male or female categories, and being misgendered can really hurtful. As we work towards a more fair and diverse society it’s super important understand personal pronouns so everyone feels comfortable and respected at work.

How can I help?

We'd be excited to have you join our community and have lots of ways you can help!

We'd love to have you join us at our open calls for artists about two months before the first show of a series. Typically, January & June.

You can also choose to donate using the donate button at the top of every one of our web pages.

You can volunteer as a reader on our Lit Team and help chose our scripts. Or you can join our board of directors and help guide the Company!

And, by far, the easiest way to join us is to become a monthy subscriber! As the old infomercial says, "set it and forget it!"

What is a "Talkback"?

It's a chance to talk about the themes presented by the show you've just seen and the artists have rehearsed.

After the show, the cast and director gather on the stage and answer questions from the audience and talk about their thoughts and experience with the script. We strongly encourage you, our audience, to ask questions and to share your own experiences with everybody. We believe that through sharing our stories we can build a stronger community together!

Staged Reading? Performance? What's the difference?

Staged Reading:

Usually performed with minimal rehearsals; usually between five and ten total. Scripts are often held and referenced during the show. Costumes are not extravagant and often merely suggest what a full costume might look like. Sets are minimal, as well; often whatever we can find or borrow from ourselves, artists, or community.

Performance:

The script is fully memorized and has been rehearsed for a longer period of time than a Staged Reading. This can include a "full production" (involving fully realized and rehearsed lights, costumes, and sets) as well as performances at the Rogue Festival (or other Fringe Festivals).

Do you actually cast people from video submissions for your open call auditions?

Yes! We're about trying to build community and don't want to let a little nervousness or a brief bit of time you are unavailable for to get in the way of working with you! (Also, video submissions are only ever viewed by the production staff and director and are only used for casting purposes.)  So, video away and send it in! We'd love to see it!

The remainder of life's questions, we'll have to leave for others to answer. Sorry.
