The Cake

Bekah Brunstetter

2021

Della makes cakes, not judgment calls – those she leaves to her husband, Tim. But when the girl she helped raise comes back home to North Carolina to get married, and the fiancé is actually a fiancée, Della’s life gets turned upside down. She can’t really make a cake for such a wedding, can she? For the first time in her life, Della has to think for herself.

Pass Over

Antoinette Nwandu

2021

Moses and Kitch stand around on the corner – talking shit, passing the time, and hoping that maybe today will be different. As they dream of their promised land, a stranger wanders into their space with his own agenda and derails their plans. Emotional and lyrical, Pass Over crafts everyday profanities into poetic and humorous riffs, exposing the unquestionable human spirit of young men stuck in a cycle just looking for a way out.

A provocative riff on Waiting for Godot, Pass Over is a rare piece of politically charged theater by a bold new American voice.

The Last, Best Small Town

The Squirrels

Robert Askins

2021

Scurius, the patriarch of a family of gray squirrels, has collected enough nuts to last ten winters. When a group of starving fox squirrels begs him to share his hoard of food, animosity erupts into a ferocious war.  The Squirrels is a boundary-pushing, darkly satirical look at wealth inequality in which no creature comes out unscathed.
