The president of an unidentified country has died. In this country's government there is an expectation of emotional response. Bernard is brought in and questioned about his allegiances to the country. His fate is in the hands of two government inspectors.
This script is highly satirical so actors need to lean into the honesty of the satire and the comedy. This isn't a physical comedy show and actors need to be able to do in-depth character work to understand the actions and choices in the script. The director is looking for actors who are able to work to be grounded in the comedy and understand the nuances without telegraphing it.

Staged Reading & Talkback
May 9, 2025
With a second reading TBD based on venue and cast availability
Rehearsals start about 3 weeks before reading based on cast and director availability
Staged readings with a talkback means less pressure and time commitment. While we dive deep into each play actors do not memorize, staging is kept to a minimum to be focused on the storytelling and themes.

This play is about a whole lot of really awful stuff (gun-violence, assault and abuse of all kinds, and death of a child) but it’s all done with an undercurrent of humor. Tone, bearing, and ability to play off others matters a whole lot more than perfect age matches. Ability to walk the fine line between hilarious and terrifying a plus.

Characters:
All actors must be women or femme presenting. What the script says is in "quotation marks"; what we are looking for in italics. Age ranges are guidelines.
7w
-
Ruby (late 60s): "The owner of a gun company; the weathered, tough-as-nails founder and CEO of a gun company. If there was ever anyone who you wanted by your side when the world fell apart, it would be Ruby" Old enough to have a grown daughter. 50-70
-
Janelle (30s): "an office manager; always looking on the bright side. She’s a bit of a dingbat, but means well" Needs to present a little older than April, her half-sister
-
April (20s): "A college drop-out; to some, she is smart, strong, and capable. To others, she’s a bit smug. not the type of person you’d typically find interviewing for a job at a gun company." Needs to present youngest of whole group
-
Lorrie (40-50s): "A farmer; She’s trying to navigate a world that is completely foreign to her." Age doesn’t super matter so much as bearing; 30-60
-
Brandy (30-40s): "A dishwasher; maybe she was pretty once, but she learned long ago that looking nice is too much work for too much trouble." She needs to be old enough to have a teenage child, cousin to Lorrie
-
Shirley (late 60s): a killer; her desire to be liked is only superseded by her need to be loved.” Think well-meaning auntie or gramma; should present as eldest of group
-
The Guns: The ONLY thing that matters for this character is the voice. Think local commercial: tonally varied, rich, interesting. Their presence is consistent throughout the reading as a physical stand in for the weapons.
